No one sees what I see.

I am the caregiver.

The one who helps.

I live afraid.

I don’t feel the pain she does,

but I see it.

The groans in the night hurt me,

but no one knows.

I see the effort it takes for her to move.

The sweat pouring,

dripping from her chin

as she struggles to walk across the room.

Or the effort it takes

to get out of bed,

knowing that the day will be filled

with nausea from the chemo.

I see it all.

No one else,

just me.

The courage,

ever present,

the will to live,

to beat this persistent evil.

I know the pain is always there,

yet at times it seems absent.

She is facing a terminal illness.

The big C.

Stage 4.

And all I can do is be here,

helping.

I am her nurse,

clean house,

prepare meals,

make sure she takes

the right pills at the right time,

pay bills, or not…

I work,

I check on her often,

I pray.

Most of all, I pray.

I don’t want to accept.

I know what it means

to say

“I’ll think about it tomorrow!”

I am a good listener.

I have to be.

In a moment

I can change

to meet the needs.

Somber, laughing, intense,

whatever it takes to help,

somehow.

Everyone asks

what they can do.

She needs friends.

Someone to call,

to say hi,

to listen.

I try.

But I can’t do it all.

Today we received a refrigerator

from some very wonderful christian friends…

All I can say is thank you…

Thank God.

No one sees what I see.

The tears of joy

when no one else is here.

The dedication Dyann has to Christ…

to service,

to loving as much as she can

while she has time.

I am so blessed to see this.

For I have been blessed.

My web site, learning to build, market, survive!

Over the past several months I have found a product, found suppliers, built a web site, studied competitors, developed policies, optimized my site for search engines, joined numerous directories, learned some marketing techniques, spent 100s’ of hours and ended up with a pretty nice website.  So, what to do now?  I guess I would like to talk with others who have been experiencing the same thing.  There seem to be so many different ways to do so many different things when you enter this business.  I am certainly not an expert, period, but it seems to me that there must be others who are where I am.  Trying to build a way to live in an economy that, frankly, is frightening.  So, if you have comments, suggestions, thoughts, or if you would like a fellow entrepenuer to look over your site, then leave a comment.  Oh, and since we have been in this webworld it seems that everyone is out to eat at our table, even though it is pretty bare.  So, a qualifier, how about lets help each other out and not try to make money from each other doing it?  A thought.

A longcase clock with a pine case, c. 1790, by Thomas Ross of Hull. The two keyholes on either side of the dial show this to be an eight-day clock.

A longcase clock, also tall-case clock, grandfather clock or floor clock, is a freestanding, weight-driven, pendulum clock with the pendulum held inside the tower, or waist of the case. Clocks of this style are commonly around 1.8-2.4m (6-8 feet) tall. The case often features elaborately carved ornamentation on the hood, or bonnet, which surrounds and frames the dial, or clock face. The English clockmaker William Clement is credited with the development of this form in 1670. Most longcase clocks are striking clocks, which means they sound the time on each hour or fraction of an hour.

The terms “grandfather”, “grandmother”, and “granddaughter” have been applied to longcase clocks. Although there is no specifically defined difference among these terms, the general perception seems to be that a clock smaller than 1.5m (5 feet) is a granddaughter; over 1.5m (5 feet) is a grandmother; and over 1.8m (6 feet) is a grandfather.

The advent of the longcase clock is due to the invention of the anchor escapement mechanism around 1670. Prior to that, pendulum clock movements used an older verge escapement mechanism, which required very wide pendulum swings of about 100°.^[1] Long pendulums with such wide swings could not be fitted within a case, so most clocks had short pendulums. The anchor mechanism reduced the pendulum’s swing to around 4° to 6°,^[1] allowing clockmakers to use longer pendulums, which had slower “beats”. These needed less power to keep going, caused less friction and wear in the movement, and were more accurate.^[1] Most longcase clocks use a “seconds” (or “Royal”^[2]) pendulum, meaning that each swing takes one second. These are about a metre (39 inches) long (to the centre of the bob). This requirement for height, along with the need for a long drop space for the weights which power the clock,^[3] gave rise to the design of the long narrow case.

Modern longcase clocks use a more accurate variation of the anchor escapement called the deadbeat escapement.

Most of a longcase clock’s height is used to hold the long pendulum and weights. The two chains attached to the weights and the lack of winding holes in the dial show this to be a 30-hour clock.

Traditionally, longcase clocks were made with two types of movement: eight-day and one-day (30-hour) movements. A clock with an eight-day movement required winding only once a week, while generally less expensive 30-hour clocks had to be wound every day. Eight-day clocks are often driven by two weights – one driving the pendulum and the other the striking mechanism, which usually consisted of a bell or chimes. Such movements usually have two keyholes on either side of the dial to wind each one (as can be seen in the Thomas Ross clock above). By contrast, 30-hour clocks often had a single weight to drive both the timekeeping and striking mechanisms. Some 30-hour clocks were made with false keyholes, for customers who wished that guests to their home would think that the household was able to afford the more expensive eight-day clock. All modern striking longcase clocks have eight-day movements. Most longcase clocks are cable-driven, meaning that the weights are suspended by cables. If the cable was attached directly to the weight, the load would cause rotation and untwist the cable strands, so the cable wraps around a pulley mounted to the top of each weight. The mechanical advantage of this arrangement also doubles the running time allowed by a given weight drop.

Cable clocks are wound by inserting a special crank (called a “key”) into holes in the clock’s face and turning it. Others, however, are chain-driven, meaning that the weights are suspended by chains that wrap around gears in the clock’s mechanism, with the other end of the chain hanging down next to the weight. To wind a chain-driven longcase clock, one pulls on the end of each chain, lifting the weights until the weights come up to just under the clock’s face.

[edit] Elaborate striking sequences

In the early 20th century, quarter-hour chime sequences were added to longcase clocks. At the top of each hour, the full chime sequence sounds, immediately followed by the hour strike. At 15 minutes after each hour, 1/4 of the chime sequence plays, at the bottom of each hour, half of the chime sequence plays, and at 15 minutes before each hour, 3/4 of the chime sequence plays. Almost all modern mechanical longcase clocks have at least Westminster Quarters, and many also offer the option of Whittington chimes or St. Michael’s chimes, selectable by a switch mounted on the right side of the dial, which also allows one to silence the chimes if desired. As a result of adding chime sequences, all modern mechanical longcase clocks have three weights instead of just two. The left weight provides power for the hour strike, the middle weight provides power for the clock’s pendulum and general timekeeping functions, while the right weight provides power for the quarter-hour chime sequences.

[edit] The origin of the term “grandfather clock”

During the 19th century, two brothers named Jenkins worked as managers at the George Hotel in Piercebridge, County Durham, England. One of the brothers died and, according to the story told to Henry Clay Work in 1875, the clock (made by James Thompson) began to lose time. Repair attempts were made by the hotel staff and local clockmakers, but failed. When the other brother died at the age of 90, the clock broke down altogether, and was never repaired in remembrance of the brothers.

Work decided to write a song about the story of this clock in 1876, which he called My Grandfather’s Clock. The song became popular, and it is from this song that the current usage derives. [1]

Comtoise clocks, also known as Morbier clocks or Morez clocks, were made in the French region Franche-Comté (whence their name). Production of these clocks began in 1680 and continued for a period of about 230 years. During the peak production years (1850-1890) over 60,000 clocks were made each year.

Many Comtoise clocks can be found in France but they are also frequently found in Spain, Germany, and other parts of Europe, less in the USA. These clocks were very popular across the generations; they kept the time on farms throughout France. Many Comtoise clocks were also exported to other countries in Europe and even further, to the Ottoman Empire and as far as Thailand. The metal mechanism was usually protected by a wooden sheath.

[edit] Bornholm clocks

Bornholm clocks are Danish longcase clocks in the form of a tall wooden box. They are driven by a pendulum and were made on Bornholm from 1745 to 1900.

Bornholm clock-making began in the 1740s when an English ship, which had longcase clocks in its hold, was stranded. They were sent for repair to a turner named Poul Ottesen Arboe in Rønne and as a result of his repair of them he learned enough about clocks to begin to make his own.

The demand for Bornholm clocks has been falling in recent years.

Did you know that your clock breathes?

At www.placeofclocks.com we recommend that you spend some time learning about how to protect that new family heirloom you just purchased.  What is the best way?  Check this out:

  Thats right.   Your clocks do breath.  ie the moisture in the air goes in and out of the wood.  Assuming you have purchased a real wood clock.  So what does that mean?  If you want to keep your clock ( and your wood furniture) healthy, it would be a good idea to buy a hygrometer, so that you will know the humitdity in you home.  Keep it between 25 to 35 percent.  The point here is to consider that the wood in your new clock contains moistrue and the moisture moves in and out of the wood.  Your hardwood furniture is crafted from wood that is carefully dried, retaining just enough moisture for the furniture to properly acclimate to the relative humidity of your home.  The wood in your clock continues to exchange moisture with the air, shrinking and expanding in response to the relative humidity in your home.  So the short answer is to watch the relative humidity in your home.  Buy a Hygrometer.  It also helps to wax or polish your hardwood finishes periodically.  

     What about changes in temperature, does that affect my clock?

       The short answer here is , Yes.  As the temperature changes, so does the humidity, which affects the wood.   (see above)

Mantel Clocks, a little history

As I wandered over the net, I found this little tidbit of info on the origin of the pendulum.  Since several of our mantel clocks have pendulums, I thought I would post this.  Pretty cool.

Galileo was once bored as he sat through a church service. His mind wandered and noticed a chandelier’s repeated movement as it hung from the ceiling. He noticed that the chandelier swung from its center and stationary position, and no matter how far it swung, whether 5 inches or a foot, it still took the same amount of time (measured by his own pulse) to complete a full swing. That is, it took same number of heartbeats to complete its cycle from one extreme of the swing to the other. Thus, the pendulum was discovered to be an accurate tool in timekeeping, and paved the way for mantel clocks.

This year, our lives are filled with uncertainty.  Money problems, many of us without jobs, or fearfull of losing them, our retirement incomes gone to money heaven.  Yet there are still so many blessings.  We have food on the table, family and friends to share with, and many in the world who need our help, those whom we can share what we do have with.  Let us all remember that justice, mercy, kindness and love are all acts that please God.

A tough economy and a happy holiday. Is it possible?

Not only is it possible, but it is likely.  Why?  Because that is the way we are.  Americans are well able to handle the stress, the frustration, the unknown and uncertain.  War, terror, loss, economic disaster, will always be with us, or rather until the lord comes.  But we have been raised to face adversity and to confront it with as positive an outlook as we can.  I am sure it is because God, even when he disciplines us, continues to pour out his mercy and grace on us.  Though we are ungratefull at times, I believe that the example he sets for us calls us to the acts of courage we see, day after day.  To love the unlovable may be just words to some, but here, in this country, we have those who step up and give to the poor.  Care for those in need, help those who have done wrong and are in prison.  It is the love of God that keeps this nation strong and this love is within us.  Our Heritage.

We will have a great holiday season.  Regardless of who buys what.

Big Clocks add class to any room

As I walked through a local furniture store last week, I noticed several big clocks for sale, many of them as large as two feet in diameter.  I wonder where those that buy them hang them.  Maybe they have large lake front properties with classy, big houses?  Big rooms and raised cielings seem to be the style these days.  Or, just maybe, they have a regular house, with 8 foot walls, and a couch that needs something to hang on the wall over it?  I do wonder if they sell many of those clocks.  This one below is not as big, but it will look great in a living room or on the wall in the foyer.  And, check out the price!
